Outdoor experiences

NFL Schema

Our goal is to give the students a broad basis for technical outdoor activities and to encourage their interest in leadership and personal development.

What do you get?

The first year is all about the technical basics in a range of outdoor activities, e.g. canoeing and kayaking, climbing and downhill skiing. You will also learn by doing, how to be comfortable and have a good time outdoors in various weather conditions along all the seasons of the year. You build up these skills on many tours in Finland and the other Nordic countries. You spend a lot of time outside practising your favorite activities, also participating in a few customer projects. Your first year on Outdoor Academy will give you the skills needed to safely practice the activities we teach.

The five blocks

Canoeing and kayaking: technical paddling, safety and rescue, rout planning, navigation, weather.
Climbing: technical clmbing, top rope, wedge climbing, rescue, ice climbing.
Downhill skiing: telemark, randonnée or snowboard, pist and offpist, top tour knowledge, avalanches, security.
Outdoor techniques: basics when it comes to routines, camps, food och outdoor gear for all seasons.
Groups and leadership: you are part of a group moving together towards common goals. The first year gives a good insight into communication, group dynamics and leadership.

Guiding and leadership

Our goal is to train highly competitive professional leaders and guides for the outdoor field.

What do you get?

The focus lies on your own leadership and how other people behave and perform in groups. Theory and practice, group and single tours, individual specialisation. You choose a block of specialisation in climbing or paddling, meaning six weeks of intensive training plus an individual trainee period. You will move towards the specific branch of the outdoor field where you want to work in the future. You will be carrying the main responsibility for planning, performing and evaluation of customer projects. You develop your leadership skills in your own group as well as with customers and by field work. During the second year the Finnish Nature and Wilderness Guide Examination can be performed. You can also spend more time practising your favorite outdoor activities in order to achieve specific instructor certificates.
